London International Horse Show 2024

This high-profile equestrian event attracts competitors and spectators from around the world. As one of the UK’s leading waste recycling firms, in December 2024 we provided on-site waste management services to H-Power Group, including everything from waste collection and segregation, to transportation, and environmentally responsible disposal across all waste streams.

The challenge

A large, high profile, and extremely complex environment in which to work, this even presented a unique set of challenges…

• The event generated substantial volumes of diverse waste streams, many of which would typically have been destined for landfill.
• Horse manure management posed a particular challenge due to the quantity produced and the need for specialised handling.
• The busy nature of the event, with thousands of attendees daily, demanded an approach that wouldn’t disrupt the show’s operations or its attendees’ experience.
• H-Power Group had set ambitious sustainability targets, requiring a dramatic improvement in recycling rates compared to previous years.

The solution

New Horizon Plastics developed a comprehensive waste management strategy tailored specifically to the unique requirements of this prestigious event…

• Waste stream analysis – We conducted a thorough assessment of all potential waste streams, collaborating closely with H-Power Group to understand the specific challenges of equestrian events.
• Sustainable disposal methods – For each waste stream, we adopted the most environmentally responsible disposal method possible. Taking horse manure as an example, we developed a unique system for converting the manure into compost, transforming a significant waste challenge into a useful resource.
• Strategic skip placement – Working in partnership with ExCeL London, we mapped out the best possible location for our waste collection points, guaranteeing convenient access for event staff whilst maintaining the venue’s visual appeal.
• Innovative equipment design – Recognising the unique challenges of horse manure management, we developed custom-made manure skips equipped with wheels and reinforced box sections. This innovation allowed for secure forklift handling and far more efficient transfer into larger 40-yard skips.
• Staff training and support – We provided comprehensive training to our on-site team to ensure proper waste segregation and handling, supported by clear signage and ongoing supervision throughout the event.

The outcome

• We achieved an unprecedented 98.32% recycling rate – the highest ever recorded for an event of this scale and type.
• Our team successfully collected and processed a total of 78 tonnes of waste over the course of the event.
• We successfully transformed manure into useful compost.

• By diverting over 76 tonnes of waste from landfill, the event significantly reduced its environmental footprint and established a new benchmark for sustainable equestrian events.
